Using Georgia's 56 State Senate Districts to Tell Our Stories
Our goal was to collect 75 stories representing the experiences of individuals living with a developmental disability in Georgia. Using a map of Georgia's 56 state senate districts, our partners at L'Arche Atlanta, Resurgens Impact Consulting, and talented photographers and writers sought Georgians with developmental disabilities to take part in this project and tell their stories.
The map acted as a guidepost to ensure that the stories reflected diverse experiences of people with developmental disabilities across Georgia. The map below shows how we organized the districts into geographic areas.
Along with the individual with DD, parents and caregivers were welcome to participate. Participants completed an interview with the story collector and had photos taken by a professional photographer. The story collector used the interviews to write the stories, and the photographer selected 6-12 photos that represent each individual and visually capture their personality and their story.
These stories are instrumental in the efforts of GCDD to advocate for Georgians living with disabilities.
